Haloacetic acids are some of the more dangerous disinfection byproducts that result from chlorine water treatment, the most popular method of disinfecting drinking water. There are five main haloacetic acids — which is why this disinfection byproduct is sometimes collectively referred to as HAA5:
- Monochloracetic acid
- Dibromoacetic acid
- Trichloroacetic acid
- Dichloracetic acid
- Monobromacetic acid
HAA5 is highly carcinogenic and probably the most undesirable of disinfection byproducts. The EPA will only allow 60 parts per billion in water. Water with this limit or more than this limit, when taken into the body, creates a one in 10,000 chance of cancer development. HAA5 is particularly dangerous for pregnant women.
